Fresh off its premiere at Venice, this poetic, genre-blending romantic odyssey follows the love between two lifelong friends, set against the stunning mountains of rural Greece.
Down-to-earth farmer Argyro and her best friend Anneta, a local manicurist and would-be it girl, live in the remote village of Tirna. When Anneta reveals she’s pregnant and expected to leave town to live with her dull cop fiancé and future mother-in-law, Argyro challenges Anneta to embark on one final adventure to find the mystical Bearcave. But before Argyro can admit her true feelings for Anneta she’s whisked off to the big city, sparking a metamorphosis for both young women as they yearn to be reunited.
Adapted from the short film of the same name, every cinematic frame of Bearcave radiates with the mountain folklore of the Balkans. Though not without their hurdles, filmmaking duo Stergios Dinopoulos and Krysianna Papadakis set out to infuse the lives of these two queer women with light and humour, in contrast with the darkness and suffering usually associated with how rural queer lives are portrayed on screen.
