Castration Movie Anthology ii. The Best of Both Worlds

Castration Movie, from underground Canadian trans filmmaker Louise Weard, is a labyrinthine post-modern epic that amassed an ever-growing cult following.

This standalone second part in the ongoing saga shifts focus to Circle (Lex Walton) as she tries to leave a terminally online trans separatist cult in a New York basement, against the hellish backdrop of Trump’s America. Eschewing the Vancouver characters and found family that were the heart of its predecessor (they’ll return in part three), Weard guides us into a darker and altogether more disorienting world of ketamine-fuelled orgies, AI cult leaders, 4chan print-outs and self-hating detransitioners, reflecting the shifting real world context it’s being released into.

Boasting an ensemble cast of established and up-and-coming talent, it features Ivy Wolk (Anora), Lea Rose Sebastianis (The All Golden), Hesse Deni (Brain Death), Jack Haven (I Saw the TV Glow), Alexandra McVicker (The Serpent’s Skin, also screening at MGFF26) and Theda Hammel (Stress Positions). Primarily shot on handheld Hi-8 camcorder with a runtime of five hours (including intermission), don’t miss this rare chance to experience it on the big screen and be immersed in its raw, partially-improvised horror.
