Girlfriends

Direct from Busan International Film Festival, Girlfriends poetically traces the emotional journey from adolescence to adulthood but in reverse, starring award-winning Hong Kong stars Jennifer Yu, Fish Liew and Natalie Hsu

Living in Hong Kong, 34 year-old Macau filmmaker Lok is at a crossroads in her life. Frustrated with the creative compromises she’s making in her career, her live-in girlfriend is pushing her to settle down and get married. Torn between the prospect of living an ordinary life instead of an extraordinary one, she reflects on who she was and wants to be. At 22 she studied in Taiwan, facing the inevitable end of a relationship as graduation loomed. At 17 she happily did as her parents expected her to – until a crush on an older girl allowed her to consider leaving Macau. And at 34…?

Director Tracy Choi (Sisterhood, QSFF17) offers up an artful triptych of romantic stories in a woman’s life, as they unfold in reverse chronological order. Together they paint a captivating portrait of the ways someone’s past lives and loves influence who they become. Finding your true self is a lifelong quest.
