Oscar winning filmmaker Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Gods and Monsters) returns to the movie musical in this dazzling Technicolor-hued fantasy, starring Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers, Out of Sight). Under Argentinian military dictatorship Valentín (Diego Luna; Andor, Y tu mamá también), a political prisoner, shares a cell with Molina (Tonatiuh; Carry-On, Vida), a queer window dresser convicted of public indecency. The two form an unlikely bond as they escape from their grim reality through Molina’s recounting of a MGM-style Hollywood musical starring his favourite silver screen diva, Ingrid Luna (Lopez).
Based on Manuel Puig’s 1976 novel – previously brought to the screen in 1985 starring William Hurt and Raul Julia – this timely yet timeless tale is adapted from the 1993 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical hit by acclaimed playwright Terrence McNally (Master Class, Ragtime) and composer/lyricist team John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago).
“Condon confirms that he’s simply unrivaled when it comes to directing movie musicals, and the three leads deliver a trifecta of tour de forces.” – The Daily Beast
