Queen of Coal

Transgender woman Carlita Rodríguez overcomes bigotry to become the first woman to work as a miner in the Argentine Patagonia coal basin, in this inspiring drama based on true events.

Disowned by her family, homeless teen Carlita (Lux Pascal) is taken in by a supportive community of local trans sex workers. Always dreaming of working in the coal mines, women are forbidden from entering due to sexism and local superstition. At eighteen she hides her identity to secure a job, dropping the facade only once work starts. Gaining begrudging respect as an adept worker, Carlita is blindsided when her long fight for legal gender recognition sees her moved to an office job, igniting a fire in her that could lead to revolution.

Queen of Coal is a rousing story of resilience and passion, about a fervent underdog fighting to change the system from within. While the central story lies in the mines, it’s Carlita’s friendship with her fellow trans women and their concurrent fight for rights that’s the beating heart of this galvanising biopic.
