Hidden beneath the machinations of Chinese society lies Funky Town, a vibrant nightclub that exists on borrowed time.
It’s the last bastion of queer underground partying in Chengdu, earmarked for demolition to make way for a metro. The Last Year of Darkness is a poignant documentary, taking viewers on a journey deep into the heart of the nightclub’s community – their struggles and celebrations. Filmed for 120 nights over the course of three years, it’s an affectionate portrait of DJs, drag performers, lovers and ravers as they live at passionate extremes from sunset to sunrise, finding euphoria in the darkness.
