This Mardi Gras Film Festival, sit down, relax and guffaw with these fantastic queer comedy movies.
Potato Dreams of America – In turns camp, stylised and moving, this film – which expands the short film that won the Audience Award at MGFF18 – will stay with you! Quirky and unforgettable, it follows young Potato who leaves an oppressive USSR with his mother to find a better life in the US. With a cast including Lea DeLaria (Orange is the New Black), Dan Lauria (The Wonder Years), and Mean Girls’ Jonathan Bennett as a fey Jesus, Potato Dreams of America is full of quirky flourishes that make this film a winner.
Boy Culture – We’re thrilled to present this sexy episodic, a follow-up to the 2006 film of the same name, which follows X (Derek Magyar), who’s returning to hustling after a break-up. Luckily he’s got young Chayce (Jason Caceres) to school him on selling sex in the social media era! Fun, raunchy and frank, Boy Culture is a real turn on and, like many of X’s clients, you won’t leave disappointed!
Jump, Darling – Russell (Thomas Duplessie), an actor who moonlights as a drag queen under the name of Fishy Falters, is at personal and career crossroads and decides to move to the country to care for his grandmother Margaret, played by the late Cloris Leachman in the final role of her legendary screen career. Don’t miss this profoundly moving story of finding the courage to be true to yourself.
Mascarpone – In this sexy Italian dramedy, Antonio has his ‘happily ever after’ taken away when his husband ends their marriage. However, some new friends (with benefits) help him find his purpose.
The Sixth Reel – Written over the phone during lockdown, The Sixth Reel is an outrageous homage to 1930s madcap comedies that delivers the laughs and warm nostalgia of classic Hollywood.
Hetero – Despite the title, Hetero captures the evolving queer American high school experience as five teens recruit heteros to save their Gay-Straight Alliance from disbandment. Filled with impeccable youth vernacular and more one-liners than you can shake a stick at, plus: Everyone’s gay + no one dies <3.
Sweetheart – Still in the process of discovering herself, AJ is pretty sure no one understands her. With her bucket-hat and tinted sunglasses, she is the picture of an awkward teenage lesbian. Definitely not her mum, who drags her along to a retro family holiday park. Fortunately, it is here that AJ meets the beautiful Isla, and begins to reconsider what she knows about herself and others.
