Acclaimed director and photographer Luke Gilford’s debut feature is a poetic celebration of found family and self-discovery.
Rural New Mexico is the backdrop for this exquisitely filmed, contemporary tale about a young construction worker (Charlie Plummer, Andrew Haigh’s Lean on Pete) who spends his days finding odd jobs to help support his younger brother and absent mother. After finding work on a nearby ranch, he falls in with a group of queer and trans rodeo riders, and through them discovers the chance to explore himself, his identity and find true freedom for the first time.

“National Anthem” is tender and sweet, and it expresses all of these things in its visual language, allowing these sensations to be present without speaking them out loud.”

“Plummer’s performance, a marvel of the taciturn turned wide awake, sets him up as one of the great actors of his generation.”
