Edge-of-your-seat horror and thrillers from MGFF22

Horror movies are a staple of the queer experience, from final girls to gay best friends and, of course, all the iconic villains (looking at you, Babadook).

For the Mardi Gras Film Festival 2022, we have some horror, thriller and suspense watches all laid out for you. So grab some popcorn and prepare to jump in your seats with these edge-of-your-seat flicks.

The Retreat When a new couple, Val and Renee embark on a trip to a secluded retreat, they find themselves in a nightmarish survival situation. From changing a tyre to using a gun and a couple of particularly creative and gory weapon choices, you will be rallying behind these women to overcome the sadistic homophobes they find themselves pitted against.

The Retreat

Bound – Join us for a tribute to the classic lesbian noir that opened the Mardi Gras Film Festival 25 years ago! Starring Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon, Bound has more queer resonance now, being directed by trans directors Lana and Lilly Wachoswki. Dress in character and cheer along our lovers and boo the baddies at this special screening.

Bound

The Novice – This takes a harrowing and compelling look at the dark side of being an overachiever. When queer student Alex joins her university’s rowing team, it sends her down a self-destructive path as she becomes consumed with the goal to be the best rower on the team, no matter the cost.

The Novice

The Perfect David – With atmospheric cinematography and a pulsating electro score, this film tells the story of a young man’s journey of self-discovery when he’s put under intense pressure to strive for the perfect body.

The Perfect David

Benedetta – A titillating, shocking and fascinating portrait of a woman on the brink of madness, torn between lust, desire and sanctity – Benedetta must be seen to be believed.
